Hand Written then Transcribed Notes of Mildred Lora Shay Ashby
Saved by the family’s first genealogist, Mary Evelyn Ashby Samples

The family images, below, were saved and identified by Mary Evelyn Ashby Samples and pasted onto Lora Susan Cunningham Irish, daughter of Dortha Marie Ashby Cunningham.  I, Lora Sue, am so grateful to Aunt Ev to have started the documentation of the family line.

Note:  I believe the man to the left may be John Coleman Ashby Jr, and the woman Hannah Margarite (Linney) Ashby.  John Coleman and Linnie lived with the Truman Ashby family when Mildred notes in her letter that they had bought the car dealership.

Family lore identifies the young woman in the back as Martha Louise Ashby Ashby, about age 12

James Edward Shay, son of James Asa Shay, nephew of Mildred Lora Shay Ashby

Jim Shay was considered the brother to the four Ashby girls,  a distinguished Naval Officer, and grew up in the Truman Ashby home as one of Truman’s children.  He remained closely connected with the four girls.  His last visit was made a few months before his death to Dot Ashby Cunningham’s home in Mt. Airy, Maryland.

Not all loved and claimed children of a family are born to that family … Jim was as much a child of Truman and Mildred as Ev, Dot, Micky, and Mar.
